Self-Driving Programs Pause Testing...

Self-Driving Programs Pause Testing Following Fatal Uber Crash

In the aftermath of a fatal crash earlier this week between an Uber self-driving vehicle and a pedestrian, industry leaders and city officials across the country are putting their own autonomous-vehicle testing programs on hold so they can ponder the effect on the vehicles` onboard safety drivers and consider the road ahead for this fledgling technology.

On Sunday night in Tempe, Arizona, an Uber self-driving vehicle operating in autonomous mode struck Elaine Herzberg, 49, who had stepped into the roadway. She was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Uber has since suspended its self-driving-vehicle testing across its operations in Tempe, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, and Toronto.

Although it had no role in the deadly incident (the Uber test vehicle was a Volvo XC90), Toyota said Tuesday it will "temporarily pause" testing of its self-driving systems on public roads in Michigan and California. The stoppage involves Toyota test vehicles operating with the company`s Chauffeur autonomous-mode capability, which handles responsibility for all driving tasks.

"We feel the incident in Tempe may have an emotional effect on our test drivers," Toyota said in a statement. "This timeout is meant to give them time to come to a sense of balance about the inherent risks of their jobs. We are monitoring the situation and plan to resume testing at an appropriate time."

Manufacturers were not the only ones suspending autonomous-vehicle testing. As in Arizona, Massachusetts permits autonomous-vehicle testing via an executive order issued by the state`s governor. But in Boston, city officials wanted time Tuesday to contemplate the ramifications of ongoing testing within the city`s borders. The commissioner of the city`s transportation department, Gina Fiandaca, asked two companies testing there to pause operations. They agreed.

"As a precautionary measure, we have temporarily asked NuTonomy and Optimus Ride to pause their autonomous-vehicle testing programs on public streets in Boston," Fiandaca wrote. "The Boston transportation department will be working with both companies to review their safety procedures to ensure each program can move forward."

In Tempe, local law-enforcement officials have been joined by teams from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in investigating the crash. Those teams have reviewed video footage of the crash captured by cameras mounted in the vehicle and have begun collecting electronic data stored on the vehicle, according to the Tempe Police Department. As of late Tuesday, a spokesperson for the department said that no fault has been determined in the crash.

In the meantime, Tempe`s mayor, Mark Mitchell, has issued a statement in support of Uber`s decision to pause its testing.

"The city of Tempe has been supportive of autonomous-vehicle testing because of the innovation and promise the technology may offer in many areas, including transportation options for disabled residents and seniors," he said. "Testing must occur safely. All indications we have had in the past show that traffic laws are being obeyed by the companies testing here. Our city leadership and Tempe police will pursue any and all answers to what happened in order to ensure safety moving forward."

It is unclear when Uber may begin testing there again.

Uber Settles With Family of Woman Killed by.....

Uber Settles With Family of Woman Killed by Self-Driving Car

We may never find out the details of what actually happened.

The family of the Arizona woman who was killed by a self-driving Uber car has reached a settlement with the San Francisco-based company. The settlement will protect Uber from having the details of its self-driving tech exposed to the public and, of course, prevent a high-profile discussion and legal decision of who is at fault when self-driving cars kill humans.

Elaine Herzberg, 49, was killed on March 18 around 10 PM when a self-driving car powered by Uber`s technology and with a safety driver struck her at 40 MPH. Herzberg`s death, which occurred while she walking her bicycle along a confusing intersection, has spurred a statewide suspension of the company`s self-driving tests. The company has continued with self-driving tests elsewhere. Toyota and chipmaker Nvida have also suspended their self-driving efforts pending the results of an inquiry into the accident.

While Herzberg`s death might have far-reaching ramifications for the industry as it attempts to regain public trust, the legal aspect of the case `has been resolved,` according to Cristina Perez Hesano, an attorney with the firm of Bellah Perez in Glendale, Arizona that Herzberg`s family retained after her death.

The terms of the settlement were not made public. Hesano also said that Herzberg`s daughter and husband, whose names were not disclosed, will be making no statements on the matter.

Whatever the agreement, Uber will now be spared a trial which could have made key components of its self-driving technology public record. Likewise, the question of who is at fault when a self-driving car hits a human will not be argued in a court of law. At least, not yet.

`Top Gear` Has Become What `The Grand Tour`

`Top Gear` Has Become What `The Grand Tour` Should Have Always Been

LeBlanc, Harris, and Reid have hit their stride.

BY CHRIS PERKINS

With The Grand Tour, we hoped Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May would do something new. Freed from the BBC and given a giant production budget, the former Top Gear hosts were given a golden opportunity to break out of the formula they`d perfected. Two seasons in, The Grand Tour has shown moments of greatness, but they`re tempered by the same stale jokes, catchphrases and tropes we came to expect from their final seasons on Top Gear.

Which makes it all the more surprising that the post-Clarkson Top Gear has become something great. On its third season since the departure of Clarkson, Hammond, and May—the second with Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris, and Rory Reid handling nearly all the hosting duties—Top Gear has hit its stride.

Last week`s Top Gear, an hour-long exploration of Japanese car culture, was remarkable. It began with a rather straightforward comparison test between two of the most exciting Japanese performance cars on the market today, the Lexus LC500 and the Honda Civic Type R. Chris Harris is at the wheel for this one, and he`s the perfect man for the job.

Harris is a great host, and his background as an accomplished journalist and racer gives him an edge. His takes are well informed, and his passion for what he`s doing is obvious. Comparison tests are nothing new in the world of cars, but Harris still manages to make this one feel fresh.

The episode`s main feature revives an old Top Gear favorite, the cheap-car challenge, but even this takes on new life. LeBlanc and Harris are dispatched to Japan with ¥1 million (around $9400) to buy a 1990s Japanese sports car to bring back to the UK and attempt to sell for a profit. Before putting their cars on the boat, though, there are some challenges.

Harris buys a lovely yellow Mazda RX-7 while LeBlanc thinks he buys an R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R, but actually gets a rear-wheel drive GTS-T by `mistake.` The challenges involve two celebrated elements of Japanese car culture—a Togue run and a drift competition. Top Gear imbues these with typical antics—the Togue challenge involves Sumo wrestlers, and Harris and LeBlanc tether their cars together for tandem drifting—but they still manage to celebrate Japan`s contributions to the car world.

In the episode, LeBlanc and Harris are even granted permission to explore the Fukushima exclusion zone, where neighborhoods lay abandoned after the 2011 nuclear disaster. It echoes Clarkson and May`s visit to Chernobyl in season 21, but this time, the location isn`t treated as a punchline. It was a surprisingly poignant moment for Top Gear, one that treats a tragedy with the respect it deserves.

My only significant gripe with this season of Top Gear is that Rory Reid isn`t featured as much as Harris and LeBlanc. His segment is the best part of this episode. In an exploration of Japan`s underground car culture, Reid finds himself at a late-night meetup for owners of wild Bosozoku Style cars. He commandeers an outrageous Datsun 280Z for a ride through Toyko that`s filmed beautifully.

As the night wears on, Reid runs into a pack of Lamborghinis all sporting crazy neon lights. He trades the 280 for a bright yellow Aventador and heads out to a quieter part of town to pick up the craziest car yet, a street-legal Porsche 962. In a drive that makes me unfathomably jealous, Reid takes the Rothmans-livery Le Mans race car out for a drive on the mountain roads outside Tokyo. It`s incredible to see this car out on the street, and Reid clearly understands how special the moment is.

This episode was great, not only because of the production levels and access Top Gear provides—it was great because it approached Japan`s car culture with curiosity and humility. This is a newer, humbler Top Gear than we`ve seen previously.

That same quality was evident in the final segment of the fourth episode of this season, a tribute to the Citroën 2CV. Speaking to Jalopnik earlier this month, Harris explained how this feature is emblematic of the difference between old and new Top Gear.

`I think old Top Gear would have just ridiculed the 2CV and the people who drive it,` Harris said. `But we celebrated it, its feats of engineering and how it`s a cultural phenomenon. It`s just a really cool car that`s charming to drive.`

The setup involved Harris trying to convince LeBlanc of why the 2CV was so important, using the shaggy 1950s example he owns himself. Here, the natural chemistry between the two hosts is apparent, and it makes for a joyous view. And Harris is right—on an episode of James May`s Cars of the People, May blows up a 2CV in a stunt. Here, the revamped Top Gear approaches this simple French car with love, even if it`s not the typical car you`d see on this show.

`I think we`re probably a kinder Top Gear,` Harris told Jalopnik. `I think the broader car community is something we like and want to embrace. So, yeah, we`re a bit different.`

The Grand Tour explores car culture and history too—Clarkson`s retelling of Lancia vs. Audi in the 1983 World Rally Championship was especially great—but too often, the show feels predictable. There`s a lack of curiosity about the world around them. The Top Gear of LeBlanc, Harris, and Reid is the complete opposite. There`s a real sense of joy and discovery in the show, which makes it a pleasure to watch.

LeBlanc, Harris and Reid use the opportunities Top Gear affords to create great TV, where The Grand Tour feels like it`s not living up to its potential. Clarkson, Hammond, and May`s Top Gear got stale in its final years, and when the trio moved over to the Grand Tour, they didn`t take the opportunity to change more than what was necessary. It just feels like they`re making the same show they have been for the last 15 years—just with a new name.

Top Gear, by contrast, had to reinvent itself, and while the initial results were shaky, it has finally become the best automotive TV show out there. It`s not the result we anticipated, but we`re all the happier for it. For the first time in years, I look forward to each new episode of Top Gear.

What New Car Has the Craziest Wing?

BY CHRIS PERKINS

APR 9, 2018...

Many performance-car makers, like Aston Martin and Ferrari, work hard to generate real downforce without ungainly wings. It`s a noble pursuit, but we like it just as much when automakers stick big brash wings on the back of their cars. Subtle? No, but they appeal to the little kid in all of us.

The wing on the Civic Type R is especially great, or garish depending on your taste. A lot of people deride the Type R for its over-the-top looks, I think they`re appropriate for a hot hatch offering such ridiculous performance. And the wing just ties everything together.

I can also confirm that it makes a great makeshift table for breakfast. So practical!

Of course, the Civic Type R isn`t the only new car with a magnificent rear wing. We want to see all them, so drop your favorite in the comments.

There`s a Next-Gen Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ Coming

BY CHRIS PERKINS

There`s a Next-Gen Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ Coming, And It Might Have More Power

Subaru has a new 2.4-liter boxer engine, and there`s a new rear-drive sports coupe in the works. Sounds like the perfect pairing to us.

Rejoice, for Toyota and Subaru are working on the next-generation 86 and BRZ. A Subaru spokesperson has confirmed this in a conversation with Road & Track today, and Toyota said the same back in December 2016. And just in time, the Japan Times has published a rumor that the next 86 and BRZ will arrive in 2021 with a 2.4-liter flat-four engine.

Pictured above, the 2018 Subaru BRZ tS.

When reached by email, Subaru and Toyota spokespeople declined to comment on this particular rumor. It`s intriguing, though, since Subaru has just announced a new 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer called the FA24. In the new Ascent SUV, this engine is turbocharged, making 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque.

So, wait. Does this mean the next 86 and BRZ will be turbocharged? Not necessarily. Subaru hasn`t announced any further variants of the FA24 engine in the Ascent. In that application, the four-cylinder serves as an alternative to the V6 engines found in competing SUVs.

But, it`s likely that there will be more FA24 variants down the road. Road & Track contributor Bozi Taterevic speculated last year that a version of this engine could power the next WRX STI, replacing the aging EJ25 2.5-liter used in the current model. Could Subaru do a non-turbo version of this engine? A company spokesperson declined to comment when asked by Road & Track.

@hoonable

The FA24 in the Ascent appears to be a bored version of the FA20 in the WRX. Bore is increased to 94mm from 86mm while stroke is the same. HP and torque peak in the same range but this FA24 runs on 87. I expect to see it in the next STI with a bigger turbo making 330+ hp on 93.

Toyota Drops Diesels in Europe

Toyota wasn`t alone in making it official. Honda also clarified at the Geneva show that it will effectively be replacing its much touted diesel 1.6-liter i-DTEC engine with a hybrid powertrain in the CR-V. Project leader Takaaki Nagadome told the U.K. Telegraph newspaper, "It`s a trend in the market we cannot ignore."

Digging In

But not everyone is in a rush to abandon the technology. Mercedes-Benz revealed a diesel plug-in hybrid version of its C-class, bearing the EQ Power badge, an offshoot of the EQ sub-brand of electric vehicles set to arrive starting next year. Mercedes-Benz notes that this is the first time the automaker has paired a diesel engine with a plug-in hybrid system. It uses a nine-speed automatic transmission, the larger 13.5-kWh battery pack, and a 90-kW motor system supplying an extra 295 lb-ft of torque, for a total electric range that could top 20 miles by the stricter, world-harmonized (WLTP) standards.

"With the right technology, the diesel has a future," said Ola Källenius, Daimler board member and development chief for Mercedes-Benz cars, at the brand`s Geneva press conference. "Improving it is better than banning it," he added.

Volkswagen`s Matthias Müller—despite the automaker`s much trumpeted push toward electrification and the development of fully electric I.D. vehicles—told Reuters at the show that he is "firmly convinced that diesel will experience a revival."

Other European automakers, such as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), PSA, and Renault, haven`t sounded nearly as optimistic about diesel passenger cars. And with a transition to a tougher tailpipe-based method for certifying diesels, bringing one to market is only going to become more difficult and expensive.

What the European diesel market`s decline and decomposition likely means for the United States is that, over time, we`ll get fewer diesels as well, since sales volumes in Europe have traditionally helped bankroll the development of new diesel engines. Currently, BMW, Chevrolet, GMC, Jaguar, and Land Rover all offer at least one U.S. passenger vehicle with an available diesel, and the Jeep Wrangler, the Kia Sorento crossover, and the Mazda CX-5 will all be available with diesel options soon. Diesel may be on the decline in Europe, but it it`s not dead yet.

Tesla crash: Model X was in Autopilot mode

Tesla crash: Model X was in Autopilot mode, firm says...

Tesla`s Autopilot feature was on during the recent fatal crash of a Tesla Model X car, the company said late Friday, potentially increasing concerns over the safety of automated-driving technologies.

In a post on its website, the electric-car maker said computer logs retrieved from the wrecked SUV show that Tesla`s driver-assisting Autopilot technology was engaged and that the driver doesn`t appear to have grabbed the steering wheel in the seconds before the crash.

The car`s 38-year-old driver died after the vehicle hit a concrete lane divider on a Northern California freeway and caught fire. The accident happened March 23.

Three days earlier, an Arizona pedestrian was killed by a fully self-driving car being tested by Uber with a ride-along human safety driver, raising questions about whether automated technologies can be trusted.

Nearly every carmaker worldwide, including General Motors, BMW, Ford and Toyota, has plans to offer self-driving cars in the next few years. Proponents say the vehicles are safer because their software and sensors let them `see` and react to surroundings faster than humans can. But critics say the cars may not be road ready and that the process shouldn`t be rushed.

On its website, Tesla, led by CEO Elon Musk, says Enhanced Autopilot includes features like Autosteer, Emergency Braking and Side Collision Warning. It adds that `every driver is responsible for remaining alert and active when using Autopilot, and must be prepared to take action at any time.` The site also says all Tesla cars include hardware that in the future will allow them to go beyond Enhanced Autopilot to offer `full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver.`

In its Friday post, Tesla said the crashed Model X`s computer logs show that the driver`s hands weren`t detected on the steering wheel for 6 seconds prior to the accident. It said they also show the driver had `about five seconds and 150 meters of unobstructed view of the concrete divider` before the crash but that `no action was taken.`

The company cited various statistics in defending Autopilot in the post and said there`s no doubt the technology makes vehicles safer than traditional cars.

`Over a year ago,` the post said, `our first iteration of Autopilot was found by the US government to reduce crash rates by as much as 40 percent. Internal data confirms that recent updates to Autopilot have improved system reliability.`

`Tesla Autopilot does not prevent all accidents .. such a standard would be impossible .. but it makes them much less likely to occur,` the post reads. `It unequivocally makes the world safer for the vehicle occupants, pedestrians and cyclists.`

It`s not the first time Autopilot has been involved in a fatal collision. In regard to a 2016 accident, the US National Transportation Safety Board faulted the driver for `over-reliance on vehicle automation` but said that though the Autopilot system operated as designed, it didn`t do enough to make sure drivers paid adequate attention.

Tesla said in the post that the driver in the recent crash had gotten several warnings at various times during the trip about the need to take control of the steering wheel. It also said the reason the accident was so serious is because the safety barrier on the concrete lane divider, designed to reduce impact, was damaged in an earlier accident and hadn`t been replaced.

Tesla`s business is having a difficult month, with unprecedented dips in stock prices fueled in part by the recent crash and by Model 3 production delays. On Thursday, the company recalled 123,000 Model S cars because of a faulty steering bolt.

2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon: Holy hell

www.cnet.com

www.cnet.com

I`m not a man who swears easily or swears often, but I`ll be the first to admit that I dug into the seedier side of my vocabulary when I experienced what the Dodge Demon could do at the drag strip. This is the kind of car that will readjust your definition of what `fast` means, the kind of car that demands respect and the kind of car that elicits a profane fusillade from the mouths of the most reserved of passengers.

Launching the 840-horsepower, wheelie-popping, record-breaking Dodge Demon is an experience you`re not likely to have this side of an aircraft carrier catapult, but despite its brutal performance and devilish looks, there`s a surprising amount of finesse and engineering here.

The New Byton...

Byton: The startup, led by former BMW and Apple employees, hopes to be the next Tesla competitor with a new electric "smart" car. Sporting an SUV-type body and a whopping 49-inch widescreen display, the company plans to make cars only for the Chinese market. Time will tell whether Byton will succeed or go the way of Faraday Future, whose financial struggles have been well documented.

Without actual products to show, some question whether automakers will continue to invest millions of dollars at CES in the coming years, especially when it`s so close to the Detroit Auto Show, traditionally one of the most important venues for new vehicle debuts.

John Krafcik, who`s in the unique position of having served in high-level positions in both the automotive and technology sectors (he`s former President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America and the current CEO of Waymo, Google`s autonomous car spinoff), says CES isn`t going away, but agrees its purpose is shifting.

"It remains a good place for OEMs to announce partnerships or features to integrate into the tech world, but it could be that its time has passed to introduce all-new vehicles," says Krafcik.

As for those flashing license plate frames? They`re still there, much to my chagrin. But at least those iPod plugs aren`t coming back.

2017 Aston Martin DB11

Place an Aston Martin DB11 amid the SUV pods and dull sedans of today`s traffic and it stands out like a Kandinsky painting at a yard sale. Sharply creased, with a low roof and tiny slits for windows, the DB11 is sinewy and taut through the midsection and bulging at the wheels. It`s a car that appears to have been driven straight off an auto-show turntable and onto the freeway. And yet, when it`s slicing past the dawdlers, the DB11 gives off a distinctly retro vibe.

HIGHS

Everything about the V-12, proof that old ideas don`t have to die.

LOWS

Not as overtly sporting as the competition, a bit noisy at speed.

There`s a clear connection to the past in the DB11, and a lot of it has to do with the V-12 in front of the driver. Not that the 5.2-liter is old—actually, the engine is virtually all new. It`s the lavishness of the thing that makes it seem pulled from a different era. The V-12 benefits from cylinder deactivation and two turbochargers. Those turbos blow into the engine`s nostrils, angering it to produce 600 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Power comes on strong right off idle and there isn`t a hint of turbo lag.

VIEW 15 PHOTOS

While the experience of a V-12 is one that makes us nostalgic, the DB11`s acceleration is wholly of the 21st century. Blitzing to 60 mph takes 3.6 seconds, and the quarter-mile passes in 11.7 at 125 mph. A Ferrari California T is quicker, but its snarling and barking V-8 seems a bit bourgeois after hearing the DB11`s 12-cylinder roar.

It`s a tad surprising that the DB11, at 4222 pounds, is heavier than the DB9, the car it replaces. But next to the 5000-pound Bentley Continental GT, the Aston is lithe and graceful. The DB11 is built on Aston Martin`s new bonded and riveted aluminum structure that will eventually supplant the company`s aging VH architecture. Bolted to that aluminum structure is an elastic suspension that never abuses the driver, even if he or she selects the firmest of the suspension`s three modes. Quick-ratio steering offers real feel, with minute, tactile tugs pulsing through the wheel.

VIEW 15 PHOTOS

Under cornering loads, the front tires press hard into the asphalt and begin squealing as the DB11 approaches its 0.94-g limit. Unlike many modern performance cars, the DB11`s suspension quivers and dances in response to hard work. Those small movements don`t disturb the Aston`s handling, but their presence bestows a liveliness and character that aligns the DB11 more with GTs of the past than with the arguably perfect and electronically simulated driving experience you get in, say, a Mercedes-Benz S-class coupe. The DB11`s closer connection to the road shows up in our sound measurements: At 70 mph, the DB11 makes 70 decibels of mostly tire noise, a figure in line with economy cars. At wide-open throttle, 86 decibels of purr make themselves known in the cabin.

While it isn`t the quickest or the sportiest car to be had in the low-$200,000 range, the DB11 marries, in spectacular fashion, old ideas with current engineering and design. It`s a charmer.
